BPC-157 - Body Protection Compound 157 - is a synthetic 15-amino-acid peptide (GEPPPGKPADDAGLV) corresponding to a partial sequence of a protein found in human gastric juice. Its most notable physical property is stability: it resists hydrolysis in gastric acid, which is unusual for a peptide and is why the oral route appears in its research literature at all.

The preclinical literature on BPC-157 is extensive but almost entirely animal-based. Reported mechanisms centre on the VEGFR2-Akt-eNOS pathway and on nitric oxide signalling, with described effects on angiogenesis, fibroblast migration and collagen deposition in injury models across gastrointestinal, tendon, muscle and nervous tissue. Its origin in gastric juice and the density of gut-focused animal work are the reason it is listed here under Gut Health.

Two points should be stated plainly. First, human clinical trial evidence for BPC-157 is essentially absent - the promising results reported widely online come from rodent studies. Second, BPC-157 was added to the WADA Prohibited List (Class S0) in 2022, and the FDA placed it in Category 2 of its 503A bulk substances review in 2023, meaning identified safety concerns for compounding use.
