Thymosin beta-4 is the principal G-actin sequestering protein in mammalian cells and one of the most abundant proteins in many tissues. By binding monomeric actin it regulates the pool available for filament assembly, which in turn governs cell migration, cytoskeletal remodelling and the movement of cells into a site of injury. TB-500's research literature follows from this: reported effects on cell motility, angiogenesis and wound repair in animal and in-vitro models.

TB-500 is a synthetic acetylated heptapeptide, Ac-Leu-Lys-Lys-Thr-Glu-Thr-Gln-NH2, corresponding to residues 17-23 of thymosin beta-4. It is not thymosin beta-4 itself but the short active motif within it - the LKKTETQ sequence responsible for the parent protein's actin-binding activity.

TB-500 has not been evaluated in controlled human clinical trials for any indication. It holds no marketing authorisation, sits in FDA 503A Category 2, and is prohibited at all times under WADA Class S2 as a growth factor - a point of particular relevance to any customer subject to sports drug testing.
